Weekly Notes 8th June 2020
Jun 15, 2020Life at Work
- We’re getting very close to our expected launch date, with this being our penultimate sprint before we’re expected to launch.
- We proved our OAuth integration in test and our Kubernetes clusters, and it all went surprisngly
smooth.
- This work brings together 4 pieces of work that have all been in isolation so far so it’s really nice to see it “just work”
- A lot of the team have been on training or courses recently so I’v ebeen doing less teaching and training. It’s amazing the amount of extra mental bandwidth this has freed up.
- I found that Open Bet admin is incredibly easy to break, don’t try and dig under the hood of this software too much.
Side Projects
I’ve had a little less time than I would’ve liked to work on my side projects recently but still just enough to continue to make headway.
- My websockets work now has full unit and integration test suites and is looking fairly stable
- As part of this project I greatly understimated the work involved in delivering an order book but the architecture for it is looking close to complete.
- As part of my drumming I’ve continued with brush work and latin rhythms, still with a focus on Brazillian music as it’s still not as famaliar to me as its Cuban counter part.
- A great resource I’ve found for brush work has been http://takebrushes.com
- Another great resource, and one of the few positives of Covid-19 has been this gem thanks to Vic Firth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4I57kTZGZgY
What are you listening to?
- I’ve been reliving my teenage years recently and listening to a lot of Anti-Flag, Bad Religion
and Sum 41. All of which have been a huge nostalgia trip.
- Bad Religion has aged like a fine wine for me, some great cerebral punk rock to write code to
- Download Festival was supposed to be this weekend so I watched a good few shows from festivals new and old.
- I’ve really been enjoying Freakonomics Radio recently, a great podcast talking about the hidden
statistics and economies in our world.
- This is hosted by Steven Dubner, author of (amonst others) the Freakonomics book
- https://freakonomics.com
What are you reading?
- Having now finished “Ride of a Lifetime” and really enjoying the “Against The Rules” podcast I’ve decided to pick up Michael Lewis’ “Flash Boys”. A book about high frequency trading and how the stock market may be rigged.
