Weekly Notes 25th May 2020
May 31, 2020Life at Work
Work’s been challengeing but very rewarding as of late, and the negatives have been basically non-existent.
- We’re getting a closer to the launch date of our latest project and it’s
starting to show across the team.
- Thankfully I’m surronded by very talented individuals who have taken it all in their stride.
- It’s also refreshing to work in a place where deadlines are exciting rather than exhausting.
- I’ve spent a good amount of time over the past month or so training up some
of the newer team members and really found I’ve enjoyed it.
- I did spend some time at school debating whether to go into teaching, ultimately I’m glad I didn’t but this does scratch that itch.
- I was very grateful to recieve a care package from the company, the water bottle has been an absolute treat in this weather.
Side Projects
It’s always good to be working on a couple of side projects, whether they’re for your own personal growth or with the intention to start a business.
- Recently I’ve been working a lot on brush work for drumming. This week I’ve been
looking at “You’ve Changed” by Billie Holiday with Studio Rio.
- It’s amazing how much this has thrown me. I’m much more familiar with Cuban than Brazillian styles.
- Brush work has really shown me how important muscle memory is with keeping rhythm and working out where your hands should land.
- As part of working on my new startup idea I’ve been building a websocket server that
can run at scale.
- This may be a little premature in optimisation but it’s always nice to think about the future and where you could end up.
- There’s a great talk and repo on scaling your websocket server to handle 1M connections. I’m not certain I agree with it all, but a great base and some good learnings.

What are you listening to
- For a self-professed metal head it’s a little embarrasing to say I’ve never listened
to Mastodon, so I thought it was time I did.
- Their first two albums are rad.
- In an attempt to improve my “Brazillian Ear” I’ve been listening to more brazillian
music
- It’s not easy to listen to rhythmic intricacies whilst coding so I’ve been sticking to “The Brazil Connection” by Studio Rio.
- I’ve recently been enjoying listening to podcasts on my daily walk and have to give
it to Michael Lewis for his podcast “Against The Rules”
- I’d personally recommend “The Magic Shoebox”, a great look at the stock market and how unruly it is

What are you reading
- Recently I’ve been enjoying “The Ride of a Lifetime” by Bob Iger
- Anybody who knows me will know I’m a huge theme park nerd, I’d strongly recommend this both from a theme park and business learnings.
- My good friend Matt has infromed me this is also available on Audible
